We caught up with Jake from In Hearts Wake in the lead up to Hardcore Halloween 2011 to talk about their plans for a new record..
In Hearts Wake have just announced plans to record their first full length over in the USA with Josh Schroeder. Can you give us some more details on the release, how the decision came about & where you guys are at with the writing process?
We approached this full length as if approaching any body of art. We really thought about incorporating the right arrangements in order to keep everything sounding fresh. After considering many Australian studio options we decided that in order to really grow as a band we needed to make the overseas trip to the states. Josh Schroeder is very experienced in producing a balanced sound, in the grey area between processed and natural. He has worked with many heavy bands we listen too such as ‘Legend’ and ‘A Plea For Purging.’ We have around 14 written tracks in pre-production, not all of them will make the cut. At this stage we are fine tuning sections, adding layers where necessary, and demoing the vocals.
How has the recent addition of your new bass player Kyle Erich changed the element of the bands music?
In the past not having ‘clean vocals’ instantly narrowed what we could and couldn’t do. Over the course of a full length album, continuous elements can become monotonous and tiresome. Having Kyle in the band has allowed our sound to evolve enabling us to write intertwined melodic sections specifically suited for his voice. It makes things a lot more catchy and interesting whilst staying true to our heavy progressive parts.
What are In Hearts Wake’s plans for the rest of the year?
In November we are heading out on our last national tour before the 2012 American journey. Other than that it’s just jamming our new material in the Bay, nature exploration and the final preparations to the songs before we leave. Maybe even one last Byron YAC show before we enter the studio?
What are a few things you are most looking forward to about playing Hardcore Halloween this year?
There are so many great bands/mates on the lineup and to accommodate for this the show this year has moved to a larger venue at the high school, its going to be a huge night. Not to mention dressing up is always hilarious, our band goes all out. In previous years we have has taken on the role of: The Wizard Of Oz, Willy Wonka and The Oompa Loompas and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It’s especially funny when someone has to cop being the ‘chick’. This year it’s Ben’s turn….
