We recently caught up with the legendary Mawds from Break Even to speak about the bands new record, touring plans and more. Check it out..
Things have been relatively quiet in the BE camp this year, there were a few rumours about line up shifts a while back.. is the line up still solid? also aside from the band what have you each been up to?
Yeah the line up is still solid we had to do a few tours with friends to fill in but other than that we’re good. We have actually all been pretty busy just working the so called ‘real life’. Steffen got married in December so the writing and playing has slow down a fair bit which is a good thing for all of us, to work and not be broke for once haha. We toured a fair bit last year and i think it took a toll on us all coming and going so much, we love playing music we love touring but we still all have our own lives to live/commitments back home which we have been doing a fair bit of this year.
You guys hit Europe/UK for your second time in February, how was the reception to Break Even over there the second time around? What advice would you give to young aus bands trying to get over there?
Yeah we got to go back to europe with Your Demise from the UK, best guys to be on a tour with & share a van for a month with! This time round there were more kids up front singing along and going crazy which was pretty surreal to see when you are on the other side of the world playing music you love to people that appreciate it. We were lucky enough to have JJ from Deez Nuts take us out last year which really helped us getting over to Europe again. So hopefully down the track we can do the same for another australian band, but really just keep working away at it and the chance will come, people in europe/uk really appreciate bands coming from so far away and for some strange reason they love australian bands!
I have heard bits here and there about a new record on it’s way. Spill the beans, when can we expect a new record? And what are your plans for the rest of 2011?
I can’t say too much at the moment, but the next release is going to be more that just a record. We have just been writing music we want to play and i’m sure when we do release it there will be people that will love it and people that will hate it but really we’re just playing music we love and want to make for ourselves firstly and secondly to everyone else, i can say that the next release is going to take off from where the bright side left off in a way and ill leave you with a line from the bright side ‘i don’t want to grow old with no stories to tell’…
We’re going to be putting up a song before we hit the road with Rise Against/Sick of it All in July. For the rest of 2011, we will be heading back to europe/uk to tour in October and then back to australia to finish the year with the ‘i’d rather be giggin tour 2011′ which we are putting together.

You just landed the support for the upcoming Rise Against tour with Sick Of It All. How excited are you guys for that tour? Obviously it’s important for a band to be exposed to a bigger/mixed audience in order to grow. How has the band been received on other bigger tours such as Alexisonfire and No Sleep Till Festival?
We are really looking forward to the Rise Against/Sick of it All tour, 2 bands we have all grown up with and to be sharing the stage with them is going to be great, let alone the tour will be the biggest thing we have ever done. Its going to be fun playing to a much bigger/mix audience but scary at the same time haha. Touring with bigger acts like Alexisonfire and doing the No Sleep Til festival has been really fun and an eyeopening experience we have definitely gained a lot of fans we would have never got too without doing those tours, but still let me play at the YAC anyday!
Which bands would you say primarily influence BE’s sound? Have you come across any interesting bands on your travels that you think kids should know about?
Ahh i don’t think there is a primarily influence to our sound, well all listen to a lot of different music and then when we come time to jam i think all the music we love comes into our music writing somehow and that’s how we get the sound we play.
We have played with a heap of great bands over the years, if you get a chance check out a band from the states called LETLIVE. We had a great time touring with them in europe/uk and their live show/music is amazing, hopefully they will get out to australia sometime soon! In Australia we love all our friends bands, a few to check out are: I Exist, Fires of Waco, A Death in the Family, Hopeless. Locally in WA there are some great bands to check out, if you haven’t heard them before check: Into the Sea, The Others, Grim Fandango, Refrain, Vanity Foxes.
Any last words?
Thanks to nuz for being a champ! and everyone that helps put on shows in byron bay and all the people that support BBHC!
We love playing there and will be back soon! Keep a eye for a new song online early July!
Thanks
Mark
