50 Lions Interview
29/07/2009

Oscar from 50 Lions spoke to us about having orange nipples, touring and the new record.
how’s recording? what stage are you at right now with it? how has shit changed (e.g. writing – what direction, have you taken a new approach, new sound? etc.) with elmsy and baina in the band?
We’ve been in the studio 2 days so far, today is the 3rd day. We are doing things bit by bit, so far we’ve got the drum sound, a few drum tracks and all the technical guides and click tracks programmed.
The new record is definitely a lot harder, more intense and generally a better record. It feels like we’ve put in alot closer to 100% of our effort into it unlike past release’s which were just necessary and were abit of a whatever. With Elmsy and Baina the riffs have definitely stepped up, It’s so much heavier and more technical…mosh is back..finally(crafter definitely didn’t bring it back).
what date is the record dropping? what’s the deal with artwork? what tour plans do you have? any plans to hit europe again or the states?
The record drops late Oct..I think the date is being confirmed so by the time any goat reads this it should be sorted out.
The artwork is being done at the moment, Matt Miller took some photos for us and its looking super sweet. Its definately a more mature feel than past releases art and concept wise.
We plan on touring alot on the new record but more actual tours than small runs and more international touring, US, Asia, Japan, Europe etc.
what is it like having crafter stay at your parents house?
It’s abit sad really that none of his mates will let him stay isn’t it?
He always leaves shit around the house so its kinda funny.
how many freckles do you have on your sack? (question from crafter)
I thought he studied some kind of biology so he should be aware that freckles come from UV exposure..and unlike him i dont go to solariums so there’s a count of 0..
how is touring europe different from touring aus on a general scale? what is the scene like and what cool new euro bands should kids check out?
Europe is cool, kids are pretty clued in regardless of any hype of label. If a band is good, they will be big in europe. Being driven around and fed is also a big bonus..Definitely check out Rise and Fall (derrrrr) Dirty Money, Cold Snap and this band from Portugal called For The Glory.
what currently inspires you lyrically?
Its become a bit more personal and a bit less general, I live in melbourne now so its more dealing with other people, work, tour life and the world in general. Byron is such a laid back place so there’s not too much to be caught up with unlike the bigger cities.
what’s your view of the hardcore scene in australia at the moment? the bands that kids listen to & look up to.. do kids have a clue?
Some kids do, I wouldn’t call alot of it “hardcore” bands like Deez Nuts are doing super well off the same old kids who had tight black jeans and fringes who have traded them in for new era hats and basketball shorts so i don’t think anything has changed..the “mall core” will always be around but they play concerts not shows.
I think a lot of new bands with members of bands who used to be big expect to be an instant success without working hard to start off which kinda sucks, you cant run before you can crawl..
In saying that i think the Byron scene has always been strong and hasn’t been caught up in the bullshit of certain new hype bands and image, so a lot of respect to the Byron scene for that.
